What is Avaros EMR?

The short answer

Avaros is a cloud-hosted electronic medical record used by Canadian clinics, family practice among them, built by a Canadian team and sold on getting admin out of the way: charting, forms, labs, billing, and messaging in one place. It integrates with Ontario Health services including OLIS, HRM, and eConsult, and it is a member of the CAN Health Network.

Underneath, Avaros is OSCAR-derived. It descends from the same open-source OSCAR codebase as Juno, OSCAR Pro, and Open OSP, with its own hosting, login, and provider support. The Avaros site does not lead with that, and the interface it wraps around that foundation is newer than the older OSCAR front ends.

What the OSCAR foundation means for your chart

The encounter note is a single free-text progress note in one box, with no separate Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan fields to fill. Writing the note is quick.

The standing record sits apart from the note, in the Cumulative Patient Profile: Ongoing Concerns, Medical History, Social History, Family History, Reminders, and Risk Factors. The note is what happened today. The CPP is what is true about this patient, and you maintain it by hand, one overlay at a time.

Everything after the note stays manual. A new diagnosis still has to reach Ongoing Concerns. A medication change still has to reach the medication list. The follow-up still has to be set. Each of those is its own section, its own overlay, its own save, and none of it is in the note you just generated.

That is the gap Medulla fills. It reads the visit and the chart together and proposes those updates as a checklist. Each item is a checkbox you accept or discard, and the accepted ones go into the chart in one click. Nothing reaches the record on its own, and you can discard all of it.

The difference shows up most on a first visit with a new patient, where nearly everything said belongs in the CPP rather than the note: past surgeries, chronic conditions, current medications, allergies, family history, social history, risk factors. A note-only scribe writes that visit up beautifully and leaves you an hour of overlays. Medulla turns that forty minute meet and greet into a fifteen minute one.

Because Medulla reads the chart as well as writing to it, billing and diagnostic code suggestions come from what is in the record rather than from the conversation alone.
